monetize twitter

If your brand is on Twitter, you may be thinking of how you can make money on the platform. With more than 450 million monthly active users, Twitter is more than just a space for connecting with your followers or showing your brand’s personality.

The site is also one of the popular social media platforms for making money. And the easiest way content creators on Twitter make money is by monetizing their accounts. So, whether you’re a popular brand on the platform or you have just started out, here’s how you can monetize your Twitter account and make money.

What Is Twitter Monetization?

Before we delve deeper into how to monetize Twitter, let’s first look at what is Twitter monetization.

Twitter monetization is simply the act of earning a revenue stream from your Twitter account. It also refers to turning your account into a revenue-generating source by the use of a monetizing strategy.

For the longest time, Twitter, unlike other social media platforms such as Facebook or TikTok, didn’t have an ad revenue sharing program, but not anymore.

On July 14 2023, Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, now renamed to ”X,” announced the launch of a monetization plan that lets content creators earn from the tweets they post. This revenue sharing program allows active users to share the Twitter ads revenue with Twitter, provided the users show ads in their posts replies.

Are There Any Twitter Monetization Requirements?

For Twitter users who want to make Twitter money from the recently announced monetization program, one must comply with the set minimum requirements, which include:

  • The Twitter account should have the blue checkmark, meaning it is subscribed to the monthly paid Twitter Blue subscription
  • The user should have and maintain 500 active followers or more
  • The user’s minimum tweet impressions for the past 90 days or three months should be at least five million

Once a user meets these conditions, they have to undergo a human review. The review aims to determine if the user meets the creator monetization standards. The Twitter monetization eligibility criteria set for getting one’s account monetized include:

  • The user should be a resident of a country that is eligible for the Twitter monetization program
  • The user must be aged 18 years or older
  • The Twitter account should not have been dormant for three months
  • The user’s Twitter profile should be complete
  • The user’s email address should be verified
  • The user must have activated the two-factor authentication used for security purposes on their account
  • The user’s account should not be labeled as state-affiliated media by Twitter
  • The account must not have repeatedly violated the Twitter user agreement or if it’s an advertising account, be suspended on the online platform for violation of policies related to Twitter ads or guidelines set for Amplify Pre-roll

Once the account passes the creator monetization review, it’s approved for monetization. Once approved, the user needs to get a Stripe account and connect it to their Twitter account for payments. From there, one can now earn money from the ads posted in replies to their tweets.

Notably, eligible creators participating in Twitter’s monetization products shouldn’t be part of the following activities:

  • Solicitation
  • Fraud and deception
  • Platform manipulation or spam
  • Noncompliance with the local law

Further, the following categories of content are restricted from monetization purposes

  • Illegal products such as tobacco, cannabis, weapons and explosives, alcohol, prescription drugs and medications, gambling, loitering, betting and raffle products and services
  • Criminal behaviors such as child abuse, human trafficking, human and animal abuse, piracy, and copyright infringement
  • Graphic and violent content, which includes death, torture, excessive bloodshed, extreme body alteration, and serious injury
  • Sensitive events, including civic disorder, armed conflicts, natural disasters, war, and attacks against civilians
  • Untrue, unsubstantiated, or misleading content such as miracle cures, unrealistic claims made on a good or service, get-rich or pyramid schemes
  • Unknown, third party or unlicensed content that you don’t have rights to monetize
  • Sexually suggestive content that depicts nudity, sex toys, sexual assault, and implied consent or pornography

Failure to adhere to the mentioned requirements may lead to the pausing or revocation of your ability to participate in Twitter’s content monetization programs.

Currently, Twitter has rolled out the Twitter monetization program to a small group of active users but according to Elon Musk, the platform will roll out the program to more creators in the coming months. If you’re looking to join the program, click on your account settings, select monetization and follow the application process.

Tried Ways to Monetize Your Twitter Account

In addition to joining the Twitter monetization program, there are other tested ways you can use to earn monthly revenue on the platform, as explained below.

Twitter Live Streaming

Brands or individual content creators can use Twitter’s Live feature to share promotional campaigns, showcase products, host question-and-answer sessions, and launch new products to a real-time global audience. With a well-planned content strategy and a large live audience, it’s possible to monetize your Twitter live streams by charging a fee for viewers to watch your live content.

Other ways to monetize your live streams include

Sponsored tweets – If you have a large loyal fanbase on Twitter, you can use it to your advantage by asking other brands to pay you to promote their products on your live stream

Email marketing – You can build an email list and send out reminders of your upcoming Twitter live streams to your subscribers. While at it, use the list to share promotional messages or flash sale and discount content with your subscribers

Create a subscription service for your Super followers – The Super Twitter followers feature helps you create better conversations with your most engaged followers. With this feature, you can select followers that you can share premium content with.  You can then create a subscription list that allows your Super followers to access personal replies or exclusive content from you at a fee

Place ads – You can also place in-stream video ads in your live streams to earn directly from Twitter. You can check your eligibility for this feature by visiting media studio

Sponsored Tweets

Once you build a decent following, you can monetize your Twitter content by charging brands for your tweets.

There are tons of brands on Twitter willing to pay content creators that can reach their audience on the platform. With a solid following, you can have an arrangement with businesses for them to buy your sponsored tweets in response to you tweeting about their products.  You can also add Twitter product reviews to your monetization strategy.

With a large following, most brands will be willing to pay you for Twitter advertising. The fee you charge will often depend on the number of Twitter followers you have, type of product and your engagement levels.

Affiliate Marketing

Another way to earn money on Twitter is becoming an affiliate marketer. Check out for affiliate programs that you can sign up for. Ensure the affiliate program you’re interested in will also interest your audience.

Once you sign up for any of the affiliate marketing programs, you can Tweet about the brand’s products using your affiliate link and any sale you get through this link will earn you a commission. To get more sales from your link, ensure you sell products that your followers will love and share valuable content on the benefits of the products you’re selling.

Some affiliate networks that are worthy of looking into include:

  • Amazon Associates
  • Commission junction
  • FlexOffers
  • ClickBank
  • ShareASale

Promoting Your Products on the Platform

Another great way of monetizing your Twitter account is using it to promote your products or services. Add a link to your product on your tweets or Twitter profile landing page.

In addition to selling publicly to your Twitter audience, you can also send customized promotional messages or DMs to potential buyers or prospects.

Also, consider using platforms such as Amazon or Etsy to sell your products and periodically tweet out links to your product or service. Tweeting out reminders of discounts, sales or promotions is also likely to motivate more Twitter followers to buy from you.

Conclusion

In closing, Twitter is a powerful social online platform and with the right monetization strategy you will not only grow your user base but you can make money from it too.

Hopefully, after reading this article, you now know how to monetize your account and start earning money from it.
